I don’t know what percentage, but I suspect it would be even higher if there were more places for bicycles to park. The residential units have their mandatory 6 spaces (which is totally inadequate and the commercial spaces don’t have enough either. Fortunately, there have been a few added near Terra Breads and Craft Beer Market, but there are still not enough.
Making matters worse, many of the mandatory underground, secure bicycle parking spaces have been sold by the receiver as “storage” and not as bicycle parking, so in many cases, they are not being used for their specified purpose and according to the city, this is fine. So, what has resulted is that the parking garages have bicycles scattered throughout and some of the exterior visitor parking is being used by residents, instead of for visitors.
There are minimal other places that could be re-purposed. Our strata is looking into a few small areas, but not enough for the demand. In our building of 200 units, we are supposed to have 225 bicycle parking spaces. We have one room designed for 18 bikes that currently has 38 in it. The other bicycle parking spaces have all been sold as storage, of which very few are actually being used for bicycles. Some people are storing their bicycles at the front of their parking stalls, but the stalls are also substandard, so you would have to move your car to get your bicycle out. Not very green, for a so called green development.

That’s no good – and certainly not secure.
Are there other areas in the condo garages that the strata boards can re-purpose?
