As cycling’s reach gets broader and deeper, attracting more and different kinds of people, so does the need to appeal to taste and fashion.
It’s surprising, in fact, that brighter colours took so long to come, especially to wheels:

Probably because it makes them look more like toys – and hence not serious as sports equipment.
And it’s not just in colour that rapid change is happening. There are so many different kinds of bikes, for so many more purposes, ages and lifestyles that we’re clearly in a new age of innovation and novelty.
