The Daily Scot: Urban Reef

Walking down Robson yesterday, I realized I hadn’t posted anything on Urban Reef – this year’s Viva Vancouver installation.  Fortunately I remembered that Scot had sent in some pics in late June.

Funny thing is it was roped off and not officially open yet people were lifting up the barricade and getting on it already!  Talk about clamoring for some quality public realm space!

  1. Lovely sculpture, and I’m delighted to see people using it, but it brought a couple of lessons to mind. I tried sitting and lying on it in various places, and found it uncomfortable within minutes no matter which section I tested. The vertical boards press unevenly on your butt and back. (Others with more collagen or fat padding may disagree.) Also, no shade during our heat wave. Things to consider for next summer.

    1. Great Points. I totally agree with the shade. The space to me feels half-complete, the reef should be complemented with some coloured movable planters with trees. It appears all the money was put into the sculpture with nothing left for anything else. Still fun to have though.

    1. Don’t think so. I met the designers and fabricators while I was taking those pictures and they were ecstatic with pride and excitement over how it turned out. Don’t think they were thinking that way with the smiles on their faces. For the record, I was able to find lots of comfortable sections and I think a lot of others do too judging by how well its used.
