Barcelona 12 – Small Hidden Spaces (2)

In a small neighbourhood park in Barcelona – in this case, Jardins del Mestre Balcells (map here) – there are all the elements, albeit in a more compact space, that you’d expect in a park in Vancouver.

Plantings and foliage appropriate to the environment:

???????????????????????????????

.

Community garden, child play area and dog run:

???????????????????????????????

.

???????????????????????????????

.

And then there’s this:

???????????????????????????????

.

If we had it at all, it would be in a museum.

But in Barcelona, you’d likely have to know where this park is – hidden from view, tucked into a block bordered by buildings, with only two entrances on side streets, one of which looks like this:

 Balcells street .

And lest you think all their small public spaces are bucolic, there’s also this:

???????????????????????????????

???????????????????????????????

.

Why would anyone sit in those chairs?
