Wonkfest: Insane correlations

Just because two variables seem to relate, it doesn’t mean one causes the other.  Or as they say in statistics: Correlation does not imply causation.

From Spurious Correlations:

 

US spending on science, space, and technology
correlates with
Suicides by hanging, strangulation and suffocation

correlates with
Per capita consumption of margarine (US)

Number of people who died by becoming tangled in their bedsheets
correlates with
Total revenue generated by skiing facilities (US)
