Calgary City Council approves three cycle track routes

The public conversation was heated, but the public came out to support an initiative for three cycle tracks in the downtown and neighbouring community, Beltline. The vote was won 8-7, with all the inner city councillors in favour.the initiative in droves.

A grassroots campaign reached 2000 followers on Facebook in about a month, more than 70 local businesses came out in support, not to mention the local community associations, a local business revitalization zone (akin to Vancouver’s BIAs), some big-name building developers (including Vancouver’s own Ian Gillespie), Calgary Economic Development, the Chamber of Commerce, academics at the University of Calgary, Calgary’s and Alberta’s chief medical officers of health, the local Liberal and PC MLAs, and even an Olympian.  The full list of endorsements is here.

The pilot is scheduled to open in 2015 and council will decide whether to make it permanent at the end of 2016.
