During Martha’s Peralta’s term as environment minister for Mexico City, a program already in place to restrict motor vehicles in the city during the week was expanded; individuals were forbidden from driving in the city one Saturday per month.
On Sunday, from 8 a. m. to 2 p. m., the normally bustling Paseo de la Reforma was reserved for bicycles, and 50 kilometres of dedicated bicycle lanes were created, an experience similar to Vancouver when it closed one lane of Hornby Street, Dunsmuir Street, and the Burrard Bridge to motorized vehicles.
“It was very difficult,” Peralta said. “Everybody said we were crazy. People said it would be bad for cars and traffic.”
Retail merchants complained that motorists couldn’t park and shop. But those fears proved groundless, she said, noting merchants now put bicycle racks outside to attract more business.
