Stolen Bike Report

A personal plea: my partner’s Scott city bike (much loved) was stolen at Hastings and Hornby this morning:

Bright green, black fenders, large frame, straight handle bars, internal hub and FAN BELT CHAIN

It looks like this:

Scott bike

If you see it, send me an email.

For stolen bikes, VanCity provides a reporting site:

  1. That’s horrible news Gord! I would definitely put a post up on Craigslist, and monitor the listings for the next week or two. Two days after getting a bike stolen from my office parking garage, I got an email from a good samaritan who had spotted it for sale elsewhere on the site. I showed up at the guy’s house, called the police, and had it back within hours. The police couldn’t prove chain of custody, and therefore couldn’t press charges, but that’s a whole other story…

  2. Yep, definitely watch Craigslist and Kijiji. Particularly posts for the same or similar model, but with generic pictures from the web rather than actual photos of the bike. That’s how my friend got his back. Same thing, no charges laid.

  3. Hey Gord,

While it may not have helped in your case but our City has started using the new bike lids that are a great way to secure a bicycle. I will send along a picture in a short bit, Darrell

  4. Almost every day someone pleads about their stolen bike on Craigslist.
Today’s captured my attention because the reward offered for its return was $500… $500!
How much could this mountain bike toy have cost new? It was a Knolly Fugitive – hah hah, good name. This absurd bike cost the owner over $10,000. The post has a CCTV screen capture of the fugitive on the Fugitive. The guy looks like a fugitive.
The poor rich owner wants his stupid bike back, so that he can drive it to the top of a mountain and careen down; have a buddy drive it back up, and careen down again.
    No sympathy.
There’s also Surly Big Dummy family bike posted as stolen – two kids on the back. Sympathy.

    1. I think you’re way off base here Arnie.

You are disparaging the Fugitive owner for being somebody who gets rides to the top of a mountain in a car without having any knowledge that this is so. Guilty until proven innocent! A quick google (actually – use ecosia instead and plant trees) finds the Fugitive to be the manufacturer’s most “peddle friendly technical trail bike” meaning it is designed to ride up, cross country and down. Most people would not buy this particular model if they planned to do mostly downhill riding. It is not an absurd bike for the sport it is intended for. Good equipment is expensive in almost any sport.

Furthermore while some downhillers do share rides to the tops of hills in cars there are more and more ski resorts that provide an electric powered ski lift to get to the best downhill terrain in a much more environmentally friendly way. Maybe you want to disparage all skiers and snowboarders too? While I’m getting too old for it, downhill mountain biking is pretty fun, technical, challenging, a serious workout and relatively light on the environment. People could be doing a lot worse with their time.

      1. I spoke with a bicycle mechanic recently. His teeth were rotten. He would have to work a lifetime to pay a dentist for getting them fixed/replaced.
        Indentured.
        It’s tragic. Painful. Ugly.
It’s finicky skilled work to fix/setup bicycles – much akin to dental mechanics. Pity it pays so little. The cash from bicycle toys isn’t trickling down.
I was told that bicycle mechanics were referred to as “wrenches”; that stores were closing due to the difficulty in retaining them.
Dentists have a cartel that enforces prices. Bicycle mechanics are subject to the laws of the marketplace.
It would be righteous if they were paid more.
