Generation Rent is a special public storytelling night and panel discussion that will close a year of affordable housing reporting by the Tyee Solutions Society, supported with grant funding from the Real Estate Foundation of BC.
The night will feature a set of short, image-driven presentations by local renters about what they value about their homes. Presenters will also share what challenges they experience as renters in Vancouver.

Following the renters’ presentations, panelists will provide solutions-oriented responses to what the renters identify as challenges in their housing experiences. Confirmed panelists:
Scott Nunn, head organizer, BC Acorn, the provincial chapter of an independent national organization of low- and moderate-income families.
DJ Larkin, housing lawyer, Pivot Legal Society, representing low-income renters in the inner city, working to end violence against women.
Alvin Singh, housing researcher, housing advocate, and young renter. Former executive director of COPE and former researcher for Human Resources and Skills Development Canada. Current working for the BC Government and Service Employees’ Union.
Karen Ferguson, director, SFU Urban Studies program, associate professor, history and urban studies. Karen’s research and studies have focused mostly on African-American urban history. She describes SFU’s Urban Studies program as “thinking of the here and now.” Karen was appointed as the new Urban Studies in October 2012 and has been teaching at SFU since 1997.
