How bike-sharing enters “the most intimate corner of civic life”

For years, the rise of cycling in New York City has sown disharmony. … But now, four months into its first dalliance with a bike share program, the city appears ready to settle down. …

In a conspicuous sign that frustration is giving way to acceptance, the public bikes have been welcomed into that most intimate corner of civic life, the wedding.

“The Citi Bikes, we hope, will become just as iconic in years to come as the yellow cab,” said Panna Asher, 42, from Leeds, England, who was photographed in May beside a station at West 55th Street after her wedding ceremony in Central Park. “Everybody mentions, ‘Be careful of the cabs.’ It would be quite cool if it was bikes they had to dodge.” …

The bikes have been summoned for other social rites. Calling the program “a new frontier in human interaction,” Janette Sadik-Khan, the city’s transportation commissioner, said she had seen “countless singles breaking the ice over bikes.”
