MAMICATSs: MIDDLE-AGED MEN IN COATS AND TIES

And they’re Vancouverites:

MAMICATS

The Vancouver Cycling Club in 1914.  The scratched-on caption says “Cycle” club, but the signs on the bikes say “Cycling”.

Ken Ohrn: “It is great to see that, in 99 years, the bicycle has changed so little.  Fixies still roam the streets; saddle-mounted toolkits; frame-mounted pumps; bells; and the general design of frames and wheels.”

GOOD ADVICE FOR VANCOUVER POLITICIANS TOO

From Atlantic Cities:

New York City politicians, listen up: Among people who go to the polls on a regular basis, two-thirds say they support better bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure on the city’s streets.

A survey commissioned by the advocacy group Transportation Alternatives showed that 67 percent of likely voters in the city’s five boroughs either “strongly support” or “somewhat support” installing protected bicycle lanes and pedestrian islands in their neighborhoods. The study [PDF] … included responses from 875 New Yorkers ….

Candidates often confuse controversy with lack of support.  Just because something like bike lanes can generate strong opinion and conflicting views doesn’t mean there’s a fundamental lack of support.  Just that people disagree, the media amplifies the disagreement, and then some politicians run for cover or hedge their support.  Same with community planning.
