“Highway Hearing” – An Old Vision for a New B.C.?

From Brandon Yan:

Well, maybe it’s not the BC government per se but this video (about 30 minutes) will help you understand the era in which Christy Clark lives.

Perhaps ‘pipeline’ should be substituted for ‘highway.’  But Clark is, with the Massey Bridge announcement, certainly continuing a ‘New Era of Motordom’ for Metro Vancouver that started in Gordon Campbell and Kevin Falcon’s time in office.

.

The film “highway Hearing” was produced by Dow Chemicals, with assistance from the US Bureau of Roads and the Automotive Safety Foundation, to garner support for the 1956 Federal Aid-Highway Act, the law that enabled the Interstate Highway system of America.

Film synopsis: After a small town learns that it is to be bypassed by a new freeway, highway officials and politicians help to convince residents that the freeway is actually in their interest. The film ends as it began, at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new stretch of highway.  .

  1. Wow. That film was awesome. Other than the funny hats and ties, not much has changed in 50 or 60 years.

One thing that I thought it showed well, is that most people who attend and speak at public hearings, particlularly against a proposed change, are old. The school teacher who spoke in favour of it invoked the hopes and dreams of school children several times.

Is it only planners, engineers and teachers who can envision the future?
