Upcycled Urbanism on Granville – Jul 13

On July 13, a combination street party, design workshop and public art unveiling.
Dozens of people from five organizations, along with hundreds of members of the public, will be transforming the 700-block of Granville street using giant blocks of recycled polystyrene. They will be creating giant games, spectacular interactive landscapes and machines for social capital.

Upcycled Urbanism is the result of months of collaboration between Museum of Vancouver and its partners and volunteers, inspired in part by the Vancouver Foundation’s 2012 report on social connectedness.   It also viscerally explores issues of sustainability by removing polystyrenefrom the waste stream, empowering people to build with it in a large-scale public spectacle, and finally returning the material for further recycling.  It’s also a heck of a lot of fun.
