A good case can be made that places like this between the wars – the Hollywood and Berkeley Hills, Pasadena,  Carmel – achieved the finest quality of life affluent North Americans have ever experienced.  Near Edens.

  1. By landscape and built form, it looks a lot like many places in southern France near the Mediterranean, and many places in Italy. The only exception is that those European places were more compact; smaller units, more shared walls and with a definitive village/rural boundary.
