Just as Taksim Park in Turkey turned out to be something more than just a protest over a park, what is happening in Brazil is something more than just a protest over a ten-cent bus fare increase.
But there does seem to be some kind of catalytic connection between shared public services, youth and social media – particularly in societies that are going through change where the power and/or economic benefits are inequitably shared.
Elites who have isolated themselves from the consequences of their decisions when they endeavour to maximize the prestige of public works – whether a shopping mall in a park or stadia for international athletic competitions – seem to have created a combustible combination that burns hotter than they anticipated.
