WHAT PEDESTRIANS DO AT CROSSWALKS
.
Shane Elliott at the University of Queensland did some research into pedestrian compliance at one- and tw0-stage pedestrian crossings:
  • As the group size of pedestrians increases, so does compliance, with the compliance rate at a single stage crossing higher than that at a two-stage crossing for all group sizes.
  • There is an increase in compliance as the crossing width increases, irrelevant of the crossing type that is present.
  • Males are more prone and comfortable with taking risks and jeopardising their safety, than females.- The age compliance distribution shows that children have a higher compliance rate than any other age group for all crossing types.
  • The distribution of compliance with vehicle volume tends to suggest that as vehicle volumes increase so does compliance.
