Surprisingly, a bike path finished second; the BC Parkway, which runs parallel to the Expo Skytrain Line, was blasted for safety concerns as more and more commuters use pedal power to get to work.
Congestion on Highway 99 put the Massey Tunnel into third spot in the poll, up from the 10th spot last year.
BC’s ‘Worst Roads,’ according to BCAA
1. Westside Road, Kelowna (potholes/crumbling pavement)
2. BC Parkway (bike path), Vancouver (pedestrian/cycling safety)
3. George Massey Tunnel, Richmond (traffic congestion)
4. Pacific Rim Highway, Port Alberni (potholes/crumbling pavement)
5. Vernon Slocan Highway, Cherryville (potholes/crumbling pavement)
6. Island Highway, Malahat (citing traffic congestion)
7. Indian River Drive, North Vancouver (potholes/crumbling pavement)
8. Sea-to-Sky Highway, Pemberton (potholes/crumbling pavement)
9. Harris Road, Saturna Island (potholes/crumbling pavement)
10. Todd Road, Kamloops (pedestrian/cycling safety)
.
And note that Todd Road in Kamloops was identified for pedestrian and cycling issues.
This BC Automobile Association-generated list suggests to Richard Campbell a change in attitude:
BCAA is very supportive of cycling as per the wishes of their members, many of them who drive. They were the first automotive association in North America to introduce Bike Assist which has now spread across North America. Two years ago, they, along with CAA, had a cycling safety conference in Vancouver. …From the way they are talking and acting, it would not surprise me that sooner or later, they drop automobile from their name to reflect their offering a range of mobility services that include different forms of transportation.
