Judy Graves has been working with the homeless since 1974, and for much of that time, with politicians at City Hall. Only she can decide which was more of a challenge.
But now her career is being acknowledged and celebrated – in part with the Judy Graves Graduate Award, to be established on her retirement on May 29, 2013.*
So when Judy sends a note, one pays attention:
A few years ago, I was asked to be “warm up band” for a speech given by Trevor Hancock …. It was life changing to listen to him, I will never forget his speech. He gave me concepts, language, understandings and sustaining hope for the world.
Dr. Trevor Hancock’s speaking on the 30th of May is the legacy I want to leave behind me, to challenge and inspire the people who have power now, and the people who are coming into power and will carry our city and our world forward.
Hoping you will be able to be there, and bring others.

* The award is intended to recognize and provide funding to graduate students at Simon Fraser University who have demonstrated a similar passion to Judy in fighting for social justice and advocating for those living on the margins of society.

Trevor Hancock is years ahead in pointing out how increasing the health of a community reinforces a community’s livability and longevity. I can’t imagine a more appropriate person to hear. And a tribute to Judy Graves, who is a civic treasure and taught me so much about how to approach homelessness and social welfare-this will be a great event. Thank you to both of these people who have truly led the way to a more healthy and empathic city and way of life. Thank you.
