Walking home yesterday, I was noticing how pink this particular spring seems to be:

.
Every year about this time, I have the same experience: Was Vancouver just as beautiful in spring last year, or is this one special: Has it been a good year for the magnolia, are the trees bigger and hence more blossomy, is it because it’s sunnier and everything is so much better lit, or I’m getting older and just noticing it more?
Whatever. I’m tickled … you know what.

…and Vancouver smells wonderful, too. It must be all those pink blossoms.
I read somewhere that Vancouver used to have the most flowering fruit trees in its public realm (streets and parks) than any other city in the world. If this was ever true it probably isn’t anymore, with the clear- cutting of those glorious cherry trees that once line our two great – or at least wide – streets downtown, Georgia and Burrard.
I don’t think flowering trees are in favour here anymore except as feature or specimen trees well away from sidewalks and parking lots, due to maintenance and cost issues.
Aesthetically and olfactorally, our loss.
