So the Art Gallery (assuming $300 million is found) will likely be moving down Georgia Street. It’s maybe not too soon to start a campaign (or at least a wish list) to get the Museum of Vancouver, surging with new vitality
and relevance, into a proper location in the heart of the city. Say, an old court house repurposed with lots of exhibition space and the possibility of a great public space on its north side.
How to pay for it?
The Museum is fronted by a huge parking lot, acres in size, that could be just the place for a mixed-income housing development (the land is effectively free and owned by the city).
And the area is going to be redeveloped by the Squamish on the adjacent lands, not to mention the possibility of extending a streetcar line into the site under the Burrard Bridge. (Mike Klassen made these same points here.)
Think creatively, Vancouver. Isn’t that point of having these institutions?

I think moving the MOV to the old courthouse and working with the Squamish to help build a streetcar line along False Creek are great ideas.
Although I have fond memories of the museum and planetarium complex, the last time I took my kids to the planetarium we were all badly disappointed. The staff did their best, but the displays just didn’t capture the imagination and many of the hands-on exhibits didn’t even work.
The Planetarium building would be a good site for an aboriginal museum, especially since the roof is modelled on a Haida hat.
It could afford some synergies with the adjacent Squamish Nation developments. http://www.miss604.com/2012/05/vancouver-icons-planetarium-building.html
