WHY PORTLAND IS PORTLAND

From BikePortland:
Bike moves — where people move the belongings of an entire household by bike — are nothing new in Portland.
But this past weekend, we were all reminded that the time-honored tradition is stronger than ever: Portland resident Steph Routh and her partner Ed Groth conjured up a record 70 people for their bike move from inner northeast Portland to the Lents neighborhood. Not only was that a record in the history of all bike moves (and yes, they keep track), KOIN-TV showed up to cover it and the story was then picked up by CNN!

SEE CHANGE

From Atlantic Cities:

Martha Roskowski has been a bicycle advocate in the United States for some 20 years. It hasn’t always been easy. These days, though, things are starting to feel different.

“In the past few years, we have seen a sea change,” says Roskowski, Market%20Street%20San%20Fran%20credit%20Mark%20Dregerwho is heading up a two-year effort called the Green Lane Project (GLP) for the national advocacy group Bikes Belong. “Top city officials are now seeing bicycling as a really practical, rational part of the mobility picture.” In other words, it’s not just a bunch of “bike nuts” who see the benefits of building better bike lanes. …

Maybe the biggest change, Roskowski says, is psychological. Now, when they look at streets, city planners in the U.S. are increasingly seeing something new, and the public is beginning to see it, too. “We’re getting away from the assumption, ‘That’s car space and can’t be used for anything else,” she says. “It’s space for people – in cars, on bikes, on transit, and on foot. It’s public space.”
