A Vancouver design for a Hong Kong opera house

That tinkle of glass you hear coming from below the northeast corner of the Burrard Bridge is the congratulatory toasts in the offices of Bing Thom Architects.  For this:

Vancouver-based Bing Thom Architects and local firm Ronald Lu have beaten out rival studios headed by Norman Foster and Moshe Safdie to build a HK$2.7 billion ($348 million) Chinese opera house in Hong Kong.

Known as the Xiqu Centre, it’s scheduled for completion in 2016 and will be the first of 17 cultural and entertainment venues at the HK$23.5 billion West Kowloon Cultural District to open.

I’m not sure which number is more amazing: $2.7 billion HK, or 17 new venues in West Kowloon.   Without doubt, a career highlight for Bing Thom.
