New Perspectives on Old Challenges
What is the future of the Justice System in Canada and British Columbia? This summer the prison population in our country reached an all-time high, with 15,097 inmates incarcerated in federal prisons.
Similar challenges persist in our province. In August, B.C. Justice Minister and Attorney General Shirley Bond released an independent report, chaired by Geoffrey Cowper, QC, which proposed system-wide reforms to the justice system, to increase timeliness and accountability.
The government has responded with a white paper of their own, and Bond has indicated that she plans to accept Cowper’s recommendations, including developing the support for more restorative justice programs in the province.
To discuss the future of the justice system, including the use of restorative justice, the next City Conversations will host Theo Gavrielides, a UK based restorative justice expert and the founder of Independent Academic Research Studies (IARS), and SFU’s Brenda Morrison, assistant professor in the School of Criminology and Director of the Centre for Restorative Justice.
