What prevents people from participating?

In neighbourhood activities.  In public life.  What’s the reason people give for not participating?

The surprising result, in the latest mini-report from the Vancouver Foundation’s Connections and Engagement study:

Our survey found that many people have retreated from civic life and do not participate in activities that make their neighbourhoods and communities better places to live. We were surprised to learn that the most cited obstacle to participation is that people feel they have little to offer. This mini-report takes a closer look at those who feel they have little to offer.
