The canary is dead – but so what?

The most important story with the least amount of coverage:

Something extraordinary is happening when graphs of melting Arctic sea-ice have their vertical axis redrawn because the data are falling off the chart.

But that’s what has occurred in the last 10 days, since the extent of floating Arctic sea-ice broke the satellite-era minimum record on 24 August. On that date it was 4.2 million square kilometres, according to data from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.

Since then, an additional half a million square kilometres of sea-ice has melted. The extent on 4 September was just half of the average minimum extent of the 1980s. At the current rate of loss, with one to three weeks left in the northern melt season, the minimum may well shrink below 3.5 million square kilometres.

This is an astounding story.

But not worth the air time.

    1. Sir,

If you would please, answer the following question:

If climate change is a hoax:

      – Why are many of the world’s major militaries (e.g. US, UK, Canada, France) describing climate change as a “threat multiplier?” (e.g. http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/global-issues/climate-change/priorities/global-security/)
      – Why is China spending $372 reducing its use of coal and energy efficiency?
      – Why did investments in new renewable energy infrastructure exceed those of fossil fuels plants for the first time in 2011?
      – Why does every national and international science body conclude that climate change is real and caused by our burning of fossil fuels and deforestation?
      – Why are we seeing increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events globally? For example, the World Bank recently reported that record droughts in Eastern Europe and the US Midwest raised food prices 10% in the month of July.
      – Why did noted climate skeptic Richard Muller recently write an op-ed in the New York Times starting with this statement:

“CALL me a converted skeptic. Three years ago I identified problems in previous climate studies that, in my mind, threw doubt on the very existence of global warming. Last year, following an intensive research effort involving a dozen scientists, I concluded that global warming was real and that the prior estimates of the rate of warming were correct. I’m now going a step further: Humans are almost entirely the cause.”

      – Why does Canada’s Harper government, which is clearly invested in exploiting the carbon dense bitumen sands in Alberta, talk about its progress cutting greenhouse gases?
      – Why do Shell, BP, Exxon and others all admit on their websites that CO2 coming from the burning of their products is destabilizing our climate?
      – Why is Shell spending an estimated $1.36 billion on a single carbon capture and storage facility in Alberta?
      – Why are China, India, Europe, Australia, California, Quebec, South Africa, Taiwan, Japan, and others putting a price on carbon emissions?

I look forward to your response.

  1. Sadly Roger and others will call it a swindle when sea water laps over the edges of 4th avenue. Of course, he, and I, will be long gone by then.

  2. Records began with satellite monitoring in 1979, just 33 years ago and this micro blink of eyelid is supposed to be a definitive record of Arctic sea ice and its trends, including Ice Ages and the Middle Age Warming Period?
