I love Vancouver and it is a great place, but I can think of an awful lot of more walkable cities even in my somewhat limited experience (Quebec City, most European cities I have visited….). On the plus side I think Vancouver is improving the pedestrian realm pretty rapidly.
Yeah, if this is downtown only, then maybe this makes sense. But otherwise, I don’t see how any North American city could possibly be in the same league as European/Asian cities.
Yeah, it seems as though the article’s definition of “walkable” may differ from how planners may use it. The article seemed to focus more on spectacular views and extensive nature compared with being able to survive without a car.
Parts of Vancouver (Downtown, Commercial Drive area, etc.) are exceptionally walkable, but other parts most definitely are not. Important to remember that this “study” was provided by a tourist guidebook company, and in terms of natural beauty there may not be many cities more “walkable” than Vancouver.
Food for thought at least.
Vancouver???? ambleside???? U gotta be kidding! I was hit by a car while walking across the street, AT A CROSSWALK WITH THE WALK LIGHT ON, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, at Ambleside. If i were u i wouldnt come here, esp to West Vancouver.
