City Conversation on August 16: It’s for Golf of course… or is it?

It’s for Golf of course… or is it?

When: August 16, 2012 Time: 12:30-1:30 pm Location: Harbour Centre, Room 1600

Vancouver Sun columnist Don Cayo recently wrote that three city-owned golf courses are underused, and that a 20 percent portion of the Langara course could be developed as housing …

Is Cayo’s suggestion a big opportunity, or short-sighted opportunism? Is the response a principled defense of long-term need and planning, or (literally) protecting their turf?  City Conversations has invited Don Cayo and members of the Parks Board to have a thoughtful conversation on the subject.

  1. Underused? I haven’t tried in a few years but I heard that tee times always get snapped up quickly, especially for weekends.

    1. Even if the golf course is completely full every weekend it would still be underused space for an urban environment. The golf course has far fewer visitors than any other park its size and is exclusive in nature due to the fee and single-use activity that is allowed there. It would be far better used as a real public park.
