WINTER CONVERSATIONS

Ron Richings reports:

Copenhagen is expanding 80 percent of its bike lane widths from 1.7 meters to 3 meters, allowing several riders to cycle next to each other. “We need to think about more than just the efficiency of the commute,” the Copenhagen officials argued, “we need to think about the joy of the ride itself… ”

Conversational cycling might not be possible on every street, but it definitely has value in neighborhoods. I love this idea best! I am not a spandex warrior, and love to commute by bike with friends. I think of it as sort of a bike carpool lane.

  1. Looks interesting. From what I’ve seen last time, Copenhagen streets are quite pressed for width already. I wonder where the extra 1.2 metres is coming from. In Vancouver, the neighbourhood street bike route network is generally wide enough for conversational cycling, as long as you line up when a car is approaching. Unfortunately, cycling two abreast is illegal here, and impossible in the bike lanes in suburbs.
