Shame of the Day – 2

From canadianveggie:

There was an SUV stopped in the Dunsmuir lane at Granville on Monday afternoon for at least 10 minutes while dozens of cyclists had to navigate around him.

.
You can post your own example on “My Bike Lane” – with a tab for reporting bike-lane violations.

  1. Try parking a bicycle in one of those car lanes and see if it lasts 10 minutes before someone drives over it. Ugh.

  2. Seems like a design flaw.
Why aren’t there physical barriers here to prevent cars from doing exactly this, as there are along the rest of Dunsmuir?

  3. Oh man, I just had to check out the My Bike Lane site. Absolutely infuriating. Especially seeing people actually leave their vehicle parked for extended periods!

Always keep your keys handy, cyclists! Scratch a little present in the paint for those morons who decide to park in the cycle track!

  4. Call the police for each and every vehicle you see stopped. It may not help with an individual vehicle, but all those of calls are logged. Then you can ask the police how many calls they got (lots) vs the number of tickets issued (likely 0). Instant news story.

  5. One thing to consider –

Drivers disobey “No Parking” and “No Stopping” signs (as well as no left turn, no right turn signs) very often – so it’s probably not a “slight” against cyclists
    – but rather a disintegration of respect for laws and rules in society –
i.e. “sticking it to the man / system” –
(much in the same way that pedestrians jaywalk or cyclists disobey stop signs and other traffic rules).

It’s just part of being in a dense urban environment
    – there will always be people who flout the rules….
