Just a few shots taken while I’m cycling through the city and see something worth a shot.  And then forget about until I recharge the phone.

Like this – the Parallel Park – off Main Street at 14th (map here),  which I read about but had never seen before:

Brilliant.  Take that, Portland!

Or this community garden at East 4th and Scotia (map here) in the Mount Pleasant live-work district – a good use of a leftover space where the streets form a triangle – an unusual occurrence in strictly gridded Vancouver.

Feels more like a new neighbourhood in some European city, using traditional urban forms and maximum use of space, than the usual devices of Vancouverism.

Finally, in my neighbourhod, across the street from where I first lived (map here) :

So heavily surrounded by shrubbery, the houses’s residents (reputedly two aged sisters) were never seen.  Now no doubt being converted into condos, at least a fragment of the West End’s past will have new life.

  1. In Penticton, you see the patio extend over the sidewalk with the sidewalk in turn extended into the adjacent parking space on a boardwalk. That way the patio is contiguous with the restaurant.

  2. The big difference here is that the parallel park is public space, whereas the space described above by Guest is private space; a larger restaurant patio. Thanks for the nice sharp photos, Gord. Those have been added to my reference photo vault.

  3. Ahhh, they got the Red House. I see it still lives on at 4th and Scotia in Google Maps for the moment. I remember some debauched punk parties there in the 90’s. Nice to see it’s become a community garden. Brunswick and that alley was my preferred skateboard/bike route from Mt. Pleasant to downtown. Bet the traffic picks up before Main and 2nd these days.
