The “stroad” analysis ties into my comment in the pedestrian thread (or was that Frances Bula’s tblog?) that Vancouver’s choice not to build freeways means that you have long haul and short haul traffic on streets with level intersections shared with pedestrians (and cyclists). It’s also why “villages” along main streets such as Cambie, Kingsway, West 41st Ave., Oak, Main and West 4th face multiple pressures trying to be local shopping streets and major arterials at the same time. That’s also why Robson Street (and not Georgia Street, Burrard Street or Granville Street) is the major shoppig street – it’s not as busy with arterial traffic.
