THE WALKING WARS

From the Sidewalk Ballet:

… behind Nanaimo’s City Hall you encounter the results of a confilict between the pedestrian and the need to provide parking spots for City Hall staff. The sidewalk abrubtly ends and in its place, an extension of the staff parking lot. Concrete abutments are the edgings which send the clear message, pedestrian you lost this battle. Know your place.

Even in the southern, more suburban style neighbourhoods of Vancouver you’ll notice people using the sidewalks. You seldom see that in the suburbs, even the highly concentrated neighbourhoods look like ghost towns to passerby’s. This map from 2009 looks at the walkability of the region. Outside the city core, it’s quite pathetic, save for a few spots in the respective cities.
