I don’t think it’s perverse to say that I’m looking forward to the memorial service for Milton Wong.  Not because of his passing, of course, but for the opportunity to share in what he believed: the experience of Vancouverites coming together as community.  And whether it was at the Dragon Boat races or a meeting of the Laurier Institute, or, as in the picture, at the opening of the Fei and Milton Wong Experimental Theatre at SFU Woodward’s, we’d be  there together because of Milton Wong’s initiative and generosity.

My memory of him is literally on the road, waiting to do a leg of the Harrison-Haney road race.  Milt was a runner, literally and metaphorically, and he’d push himself along with everyone else to get to the finish line.  But the purpose was the experience, the sharing, the pleasure of being with family and friends and community.

I will so miss that bemused, cordial and gracious smile, which so well expressed the man.

  1. When a great man dies, there is an oppurtunity for an even greater man to take his place. Lets hope that such a man steps forward.
