Two different perspectives on downsizing:
(1) Franca Temolo-Jones in Vancouver:
We went from a 2,400-square-foot home in the heart of the suburbs to an 1,100-square-foot, three-bedroom apartment in the heart of the city (okay, maybe not downtown, but close enough to feel connected). …
My feelings after our move can be summed up in two words: total liberation. After mega-simplifying and the much-anticipated relocation into the city, I’m not ashamed to say I had a few private moments of shedding silent tears – the joyful kind. It was akin to a spiritual experience. I was giddy for the first six months. I hadn’t felt this transformed and renewed in years.
(2) Meanwhile, it’s a different world in the small towns of America, like Marion, Indiana, where the Mayor is getting praise for this:
“We have 22 parks in our system. Well, we don’t need 22 parks,” he says. “[So] we’re selling parks.”
Selling parks, giving them away, so you won’t have to go around and mow all that grass. The goal is five big parks — parks that people drive to.
“Years ago you had to have a different park in every neighborhood because people walked,” says Seybold. “But it’s a different world today, and I think that’s what you have to do with the federal government.”

wow, quelle “tale of two cities” 🙂
