IT’S BETTER ON A BIXI

And safer too:

In city after city, cyclists are hit, injured, and killed less often when using bike-sharing than when riding their personal bicycles.

Noah Kazis of Streetsblog brings us the somewhat counter-intuitive fact that bike share riders are involved in fewer accidents than bikers using their own set of wheels.

CRITICAL MASS FOR BIKE SHARING

Jean Chong passes along this video from Streetsblog on bike-sharing in Hangzhou, China.   “A bit promotional,” she notes, “since it’s the bike share company speaking but video clearly shows real critical mass using the public bike share system.”

  1. The comment about bike-sharers having fewer accidents doesn’t surprise me at all. Occasional riders are more cautious and alert than folks who, because they ride all the time, have become complacent. It’s a real challenge to ride (or drive!) the same route the same way day after day and still be prepared on an instant’s notice to deal with something unexpected.

  2. I can only agree with Sean. Occasional riders are more concerned about their health. But in my opinion, there is also financial factor playing its role. When you borrow anything, it’s quite obvious for the most of the people they will try to watch for it more and take more care about it.
