Some of important articles that appeared while I was away.
Matt Burrows did a great job pulling together critiques of cycling infrastructure around the region in the Georgia Straight (not to mention some back-and-forth on the politics).
Speaking of which, everyone seemed to be weighing in on the Great New York Bikelash, especially in its principal journals. New Yorker columnist Jack Cassidy (who’s one of those suing the City to get the Prospect Park West cycle track removed) raised the temperature enough to get scathing responses from both the New York Times and The Economist. Grist commented on this terrorist threat. What fun!
After all the debate over what the Times termed “one of the more heated civic controversies in recent memory,” a poll revealed that “more than half of registered voters — 54 percent — said they believed the expansion of bicycle lanes had been a positive development for the city.”

BIKE BAN
They’re thinking of banning electric bicycles in Malaysia:
Bicycles may be taken off the road if the Cabinet accepts a recommendation from the Transport Ministry.
Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said he will be presenting a paper during Friday’s Cabinet meeting to recommend disallowing electric bicycles, citing safety reasons. …
While Kong acknowledged that electric bicycles were good for the environment, he stressed that the higher risk of death and injury from collision did not warrant their usage.
“If you want to talk about being environmentally-friendly, using a normal bicycle is still the best,” he pointed out.

Minister Kong, you da man.
I think something does need to be done about electric bikes. Don’t think banning them is the answer but some sort of regulation. Right now they are a large grey area.
