Even as Vancouver goes through some mild angst over making its core more pedestrian and cycling friendly, similar actions (and similar angst) are afoot in Sydney, Australia.
Sydney to get pedestrian-friendly CBD
Mon Sep 13, 2010New South Wales Premier Kristina Keneally will today sign a memorandum of understanding with Sydney’s Lord Mayor Clover Moore committing to an overhaul of transport and traffic in the CBD.
The measures include slowing down traffic to 40 kilometres per hour and introducing light rail to the city centre….
The Premier says, despite opposition scepticism, the changes will be delivered.
“We’ll see the creation of 10 kilometre shared zones in streets and laneways finalised by the end of 2011 and reducing the speed limits in the city by early 2011,” she said….
Lord Mayor Clover Moore says the plan is a breakthrough. She says until now the needs of pedestrians have often been overlooked. …
“It’s what Mayor Bloomberg is doing in New York, it’s what Ken Livingstone has done in London, and we really think it’s a breakthrough.”
