Bikes and Business – 2

Not that I want to upset the debate over bike lanes with a bunch of annoying facts, but people keep sending me these things.

Results of the survey indicate widespread local business support for the corrals with few exceptions. In addition, the businesses in the sample perceived that bicyclists, on average, account for one quarter (24.8 percent) of their total customer base.

More than two-thirds responded that they have seen the demand for bike parking rise over time, along with the rate of bicyclists as customers.

Using these responses as a guide, it can be determined that businesses recognize that the investment in quality short-term bicycle corral facilities has been an asset for both bicyclists and their commercial establishment.

More here.

Don Buchanan also sends in a study from New York City that indicates : “Streets with bicycle lanes are 40 percent less deadly for pedestrians than those without bicycle lanes.”

  1. That NYC quote is the money shot for me. I didn’t notice the BCIT kids hanging out on the corner opposite the narky St Regis before the dunsmuir lane, but there’s a lot of them now. I bet that whole side of the street is way more pedestrian’d up now.

I remember seeing the dude from Sushi Home coming out and sweeping the bike path. Now that’s endorsement.
