  1. Hey, that’s the diversion of the highway into the median to bypass “Charlie’s Tree” – a memorial to WWI soldiers. Here’s a post over at SSP:

BTW, anyone who has ever noticed a deflection/kink towards the median in the EB lanes of Hwy 1 between the Golden Ears Way overpass and the 192nd St. interchange – it was apparently done at the behest of Flyin’ Phil Gaglardi during highway construction in the 1960’s to avoid “Charlie’s Tree”, which was planted in 1919 -1920 by Charlie Perkins as a memorial to his buddies from WW1.

It was originally a 210-foot Douglas Fir, but MoT had to cut it back to 12 m in 1968 as it was apparently ailing (vandallized twice by fire) at the time.

Charlie’s Tree is just to the south of where the pavement flares outward with adjacent barrier in this google link:

And a pic of an on-site memorial plaque is contained at page 38 within this .pdf file:

  2. Thanks Ron, that’s an interesting historical note.

On other parts of the project I have noticed and lamented the loss of much “boulevard” amenity, ditches full of bull rushes, trees and shrubs, and the like.

Given the narrowness of the overall ROW, I hope the budget will allow for other visual improvements to be put in their place, where replanting isn’t an option. The use of sculpted concrete, ceramiics and other materials and shapes comes to mind.

  3. Someone else at SSP mentioned that the pic could be of the 200th overpass – and reading the caption, that’s probably correct if it was taken “from” the 192nd overpass. So the deflection would be behind the photographer.
