I find most ‘Vancouver Style’ tower on podium condo’s that have gone up in the last 15 years vapid, boring, uninspired and general eyesores that will never capture the charm or wonder that skyscrapers in more established cities illicit, let alone escape their tendency to be about as interesting and unique to look at as the average bowel movement. My slight displeasure with the architectural choices of the Vancouver Style don’t even touch upon my views about the socially exclusionary redevelopment that accompanies these towers and has priced most working and middle class people who weren’t already in the housing market out of it.
All of that that being said, despite the Woodwards Tower being a new building, I have to admit that I like it. It manages to capture a retro look without being too derivative or ostentatious. Despite being much larger than most of the surrounding buildings, it don’t seem out of place. And it has a certain uniqueness when it comes to the colour choices, use of windows and placement of walls that are completely lacking from most tower on podium buildings that have been built in the last 15 years.
