O5 – Faces

Finally, we get to see who’s here, and who we are.

The Torch has brought out the people of Vancouver.  And just as predicted, it has brought out the spirit of our Olympics.  It’s not yet clear what this is – ‘our Olympics’ – but we’re all particitpating in its creation one way or the other.

Media, including ones like this, will fill pages and screens with personal stories, up-close photos, interviews, profiles – and not just of the athletes, not just the names in the newspaper, of Vanoc and Pivot.   But of Vancouver and its people.

They will then try to tell us who we are.   Everyone will be queried for an opinion.  But as we mingle, start spontaneous conversations, give guidance and share beers, all of us who come out to these games, who fill the public spaces, whose faces fill each other’s screens – we’ll be what Vancouver becomes.  And we haven’t seen ourselves like this before.

Here’s the thing about Vancouver: our diversity reflects the mix in the world today.  It’s hard to tell who lives here and who’s visiting.  Who’s a newcomer, whose family goes back the previous two centuries.  But we now have permission to talk to each other, to get past the constraints that inibit our mutual contact, and that we live with from day to day.  We’re going to get to know ourselves a lot better.

That’s one Olympic legacy I really hope for.
