Biennale 2: Pillows

Next up in our Vancouver Biennale series: Pillows, by Liu Jianhua.

Pillows - kid running

First thought I had when I saw them: Where’s the yoga class? Why did they abandon their pillows?

Pillows - close

No doubt the artist has captured the look of pillows.  Even close up, they require a finger test to confirm they’re ceramic.  But I’m not sure the piece collectively holds the space in which it has been set.  The Coal Harbour Green skyline is a very dramatic setting all on its own, and requires something more to complement its scale or to pull the viewer away from the seawall.

Pillows - family
