Proposal for the Ideal City & Free Webinar on Planning from Science Fiction

No need to check if it is truly September or the first day of April. There’s plans to find a 150,000 acre property in the American desert and build a city that can eventually house five million people. Called “Telosa” this new city has lofty goals which include setting a “global standard for urban living, human potential and a forward looking “blue print“. You can find out more about Bjarke Ingels’ proposal here. Mr. Ingels is also the architect behind twisty Vancouver House.

The timing of this announcement works well with this free webinar from Georgia Tech, which will examine how science fiction authors have influenced planning and design practice in city making.

What can urbanists learn from how Sci-Fi authors have reimagined cities?

Georgia Tech (GT) Regents Professor in Science Fiction Lisa Yaszek will discuss with host Ellen Dunham-Jones how diverse voices from around the world have challenged racial and gender norms in science and technology while proposing alternative kinds of cities, spaces, and social justice.

Yaszek is the author of Galactic Suburbia and co-editor of Literary Afrofuturism in the Twenty-First Century. Shaunitra Wisdom, GT School of Architecture Academic Advisor, author, and Periplus Fellow will share her insights and moderate Question and Answer session.
